UK retailer Dixons Carphone
revealed it suffered a cyberattack
which compromised data belonging
to millions of customers.
The company said it had determined
that there had been unauthorised
access to certain data, discovered
as part of a review into the firm’s
systems and data, although there
had been no evidence of any
fraudulent use of that data.
An investigation indicated that there
was an attempt to compromise
5.9 million cards in one of the
processing systems of Currys PC
World and Dixons Travel stores.

Advanced methods were used to gain unauthorised access
to PageUp’s IT systems in Australia, Singapore and the UK.
PageUp, a provider of HR software-as-a-service, proactively
identified the breach and effectively contained the situation.
The firm said it immediately hired independent cybersecurity
firms and advisors to assist in further understanding the
breach and to protect clients and software.
In a statement the firm said: “After extensive review we
now know that certain personal data relating to our clients,
applicants, references and our employees has been accessed
by a cyberattacker. Although the incident has been contained
and PageUp is safe to use, we sincerely regret some data may
be at risk. Given the balance of probabilities, we are taking
action to inform our customers and update authorities.”
