Cybereason has released an investigative research
report from its Nocturnus Research Group titled “Hunting
Raccoon: The New Masked Bandit on the Block.”
Cybereason researchers Assaf Dahan and Lior
Rochberger have been investigating Raccoon for
six-months and have discovered that the malware is
exploding in popularity in the underground community
despite being released earlier this year. It has become
one of the top 10 most-referenced malware on the market
in 2019 but lacks sophistication.
The researchers say the malware is spreading across
organisations and individuals in Europe, North America
and Asia.

NordVPN reported that it had become aware
that a server it was renting at a data centre
in Finland had been accessed without
authorisation. This was done via an insecure
remote management system account which
NordVPN said the data centre had added
without its knowledge.
However, the intruder did not discover users’
identities, usernames, or passwords because
none of the company’s applications send user-
created credentials for authentication. It said
this was an isolated case and no other servers
or data centre providers it uses were affected.
