news Agreement signed to launch Oman’s first cybersecurity accelerator he Ministry of Technology and Communications in Oman has signed an agreement to launch the country’s first specialised cybersecurity accelerator. This has been achieved in co-operation with the Oman– Britain Digital Centre and Takween, the annual investment programme affiliated to Oman Technology Fund. T The project is a significant milestone for the whole Middle East and it aims to support companies operating in the cybersecurity sector. The programme, which has been dubbed as the ‘Sas Accelerator’, has been designed especially for individuals and groups to serve as a business think-tank. This will provide for the development of business ideas in the field of cybersecurity and the encouragement of digitalised entrepreneurship. It will provide scope for improving efficient work models and building vital leadership skills with the aim of enabling participants to take steps necessary that will lead to the growth of their companies. The agreement was signed by Hassan bin Fida al-Lawati, Director General of the Digital Community Development Sector at the Ministry of Technology and Communications, and the adviser of the British Embassy in Muscat. The ministry, together with Oman Broadband and Ooredoo, has recently launched the high-speed Oman Government Network (OGN). This network is an integrated and safe government network that meets the future demands of e.oman projects. ENTERPRISES EXPOSED AS 45,000 DATA LOSS INCIDENTS ARE MISSED EVERY MONTH cAfee, the device-to-cloud cybersecurity company, has released a new research study entitled Enterprise Supernova: The Data Dispersion Cloud Adoption and Risk Report. M The results describe the broad distribution of data across devices and the cloud, highlighting critical gaps for enterprise security. A total of 79% of companies surveyed store sensitive data in the public cloud. While these companies approve an average of 41 cloud services each, up 33% from last year, thousands of other services are used ad-hoc without vetting. In addition, 52% of companies use cloud services that 6 have had user data stolen in a breach. As part of this report, McAfee surveyed 1,000 enterprise organisations in 11 countries and investigated anonymised events from 30 million enterprise cloud users to gain a holistic view of modern data dispersion. “The force of the cloud is unstoppable, and the dispersion of data creates new opportunities for both growth and risk,” said Rajiv Gupta, Senior Vice President, Cloud Security, McAfee. “Security that is data-centric, creating a spectrum of controls from the device, through the web, into the cloud and within the cloud provides the opportunity to break the paradigm of yesterday’s network-centric protection that is not sufficient for today’s cloud- first needs.” Issue 23 | www.intelligentciso.com
