Cybersecurity experts have stepped up support for UK schools , colleges and universities following a spate of online attacks with the potential to de-rail their preparations for the new term . The National Cyber Security Centre ( NCSC ) issued an alert to the sector containing a number of steps they can take to keep cybercriminals out of their networks , following a recent spike in ransomware attacks . Adenike Cosgrove , Cybersecurity Strategy , International at Proofpoint , said : “ In recent years , the frequency , sophistication level and cost of cyberattacks against universities has increased .”

One of the world ’ s largest digital camera operators – Canon ’ s cloud storage platform – has been hit with Maze ransomware , with the malicious cybercriminals allegedly stealing around 10GB of data from the company . John Shier , Senior Security Advisor , Sophos , said : “ This is yet another example of the Maze gang ’ s sustained and brazen targeting of enterprises . Following other recent high-profile attacks , this latest salvo should be a wake-up call to all enterprises that haven ’ t taken the time to assess their security posture and bolster their defences against these pernicious adversaries .”
