SITA and NEC team up to propel digital identity adoption in global travel

A specialists NEC have joined forces in a bid to accelerate the global adoption of digital identity technology within the travel industry.

NEC is now part of SITA’ s Digital Travel Ecosystem, an open framework designed to ensure different digital identity systems can work together seamlessly for real-time verification. The ecosystem, developed with Indicio, simplifies the integration process for airports, airlines, and governments by removing the need for direct connections between identity issuers and verifiers.
With 28 % of airlines and 43 % of airports planning to implement biometric identity management solutions in the next 12 months( SITA Air Transport IT Insights 2024), demand for interoperable systems is growing. A lack of standardisation has slowed widespread adoption, but the SITA- NEC collaboration addresses this challenge through a scalable framework for secure identity exchange.
According to SITA and NEC, the secure Trust Network – a central component of the ecosystem that governs the global sharing of digital credentials with a privacy-by-design approach, enables travellers to have control over their personal data.
“ After years of investment, aviation and other travel stakeholders are now seeing the full potential of digital identities, and the industry is gearing up to scale,” said Jeremy Springall, Senior Vice President of Borders at SITA.

HMRC blocks more than 100 million suspicious emails amid cyberattack surge

2021 and September 2024. The data indicates a sharp increase in attempted cyberattacks.
Between November 2021 and October 2022, HMRC blocked 23.7 million malicious emails. The number surged to 40.3 million in the following year( November 2022 to October 2023) and remained high at 40.9 million in the period from November 2023 to September 2024.
The total number of blocked malicious emails over the three-year period stands at a staggering 105 million, demonstrating the persistent and growing threat faced by UK government digital infrastructure. is Majesty’ s Revenue and Customs( HMRC) has revealed it intercepted over 100 million malicious emails targeting UK

H government services in the last three years, highlighting a significant escalation in cyberthreats.

Figures obtained through a Freedom of Information( FOI) request detail the volume of suspect emails blocked between November
Andy Ward, SVP International, Absolute Security, said:“ These numbers show just how relentless cybercriminals are when it comes to targeting government institutions. Email remains one of the main ways attackers try to break into systems – whether through malware, spam or other tactics designed to exploit vulnerabilities.
“ To tackle these threats effectively, organisations need a strong cyber-resilience strategy. This means real-time monitoring of systems, advanced threat detection and the ability to act fast when something goes wrong.”
