Palo Alto Networks’ 2025 Unit 42 Global Incident Response
Report highlights a concerning trend in Malaysia, where the rising threat to critical infrastructure is prompting a more proactive cybersecurity stance among industry leaders. Data from CyberSecurity Malaysia indicates 6,209 reported cases in 2024, a 5 % increase from the previous year, with fraud, intrusion attempts and malware attacks primarily targeting government agencies, financial institutions and businesses.
Recognising this urgent need for stronger defenses, the Malaysian government has allocated RM30 million in Budget 2025 to bolster national cyber resilience. This includes RM20 million to strengthen the National Scam Response Centre and an additional RM10 million to expand NACSA( National Cyber Security Agency) by creating 100 new positions.

Western Sydney University has notified approximately
10,000 individuals, mainly current and former students, about unauthorised access to its systems via a single sign-on( SSO) system. The university detected potential unauthorised access on Saturday, 8th February 2025 and immediately launched an investigation and remediation efforts following targeted network attacks.
Investigations since then have been analysing the extent of the impact while the university implemented protective measures and responded to ongoing attacks. Initial findings indicate the unauthorised access through the SSO system began on 28th January 2025 and persisted until 25th February 2025.
The university stated that its internal and external cyber experts worked to block the access pathways, enhance account security, initiate password resets, and deploy additional monitoring and forensic tools. They acknowledged the personal impact on their community and pledged ongoing support.
