ON THE LIGHTER SIDE OF THINGS, WE

‘ GO PHISHING’ WITH GABE DIMEGLIO, CISO, SVP & GM OF RIMINI PROTECT AND RIMINI WATCH SOLUTIONS, WHO TELLS US

ABOUT LIFE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE OFFICE.
What would you describe as your most memorable achievement in the cybersecurity industry?
Building Rimini Street’ s security capability from the ground up has been one of the highlights of my career. Since joining in 2010, I’ ve had the privilege of being part of a security team that’ s grown both in capability and confidence. Our Silver Stevie award for‘ Front-Line Customer Service Team of the Year’ is a particular highlight as we expanded our global ISO framework to include ISO / IEC 27001:2005 certification, making us the first third-party support provider to achieve this distinction.
What first made you think of a career in cybersecurity?
Technology was a central part of my upbringing, with family members working in software and technical development across defense and aerospace.
These influences shaped my trajectory early on, but I’ ve also always been fascinated by understanding systems and testing their boundaries.
This evolved into white hat hacking – examining how to prevent systems from operating counter to their intended function. This led me directly into cybersecurity.
What style of management philosophy do you employ with your current position?
My approach centres on mentoring and coaching. I deliberately hire professionals who are smarter than me and give them space to grow. Rather than dictating to them, I want my teams to discover and innovate independently, while I offer oversight and guidance where needed.
Cross-mentorship forms the backbone of our culture. With responsibility spanning several adjacent but distinct domains, we’ ve created an environment where specialists continually learn from colleagues in other areas. This allows them to broaden their perspective beyond their expertise and build relationships that enhance our collective effectiveness.
What do you think is the current hot cybersecurity talking point?
Artificial intelligence dominates the conversation. While it offers opportunities for enhancing cyber defences, it also introduces significant threats. A major concern is the potential risk of poorly governed AI, particularly regarding data protection. Organisations must maintain rigorous data governance, clearly understand their AI integrations
