issue 99 editor’ s note
ello and welcome to
H the latest edition of Intelligent CISO.
This month’ s cover story, which can be found on page 15, features Will Lyne, Head of Economic and Cybercrime at the Metropolitan Police. He tells us how cybercrime is becoming increasingly sophisticated, scalable and interconnected, creating growing challenges for organisations, individuals and law enforcement agencies alike.
Lyne explains that phishing, smishing, ransomware and business email compromise remain among the most common threats, while AI is helping cybercriminals make attacks more convincing and effective.
He highlights the importance of strong cyberhygiene, incident response planning and reporting cybercrime to help law enforcement disrupt criminal activity and prevent further harm. The article also explores how organised crime groups are increasingly combining cybercrime, fraud and other forms of online criminality to operate at scale.
Lyne stresses that every organisation is a potential target and warns that the boundaries between cybercrime and economic crime will continue to blur in the years ahead. He concludes by emphasising that international co-operation and intelligence sharing between industry, government and law enforcement are essential to strengthening cyber-resilience and tackling global cybercrime networks.
Elsewhere, on page 24 we hear how The University of Manchester is advancing its Digital Transformation strategy by creating inclusive, people-led digital environments that improve access, governance and security for more than 44,000 students and staff. As part of this initiative, the university is expanding its use of Microsoft 365 and migrating data to cloud-based services to enhance collaboration and protect sensitive research and intellectual property.
To strengthen resilience across its Microsoft 365 environment, the university deployed Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft 365, providing backup, recovery and security for services including OneDrive, SharePoint and
Teams. Working with Veeam, the institution successfully completed a large-scale backup covering tens of thousands of user accounts and sites without disrupting end-users.
The solution enables rapid, granular recovery of deleted files, helping service desk teams respond more quickly to requests from students, staff and faculty. It also supports the university’ s security requirements through encryption and cost-effective data protection, while allowing new support staff to become proficient in the platform after minimal training.
